Headcount Change Chart Template

A headcount change waterfall shows opening headcount, every hire and departure by type, and closing headcount in a single view. People teams and CFOs use it in board decks, HR reviews, and quarterly business reviews to show workforce changes clearly without a table of numbers.

How to read it

Opening and closing headcount bars sit on the baseline. Upward bars are additions to the team — new hires, backfills, transfers in. Downward bars are departures — voluntary attrition, layoffs, transfers out. The closing bar shows the net result. If attrition bars are consistently large relative to new hire bars, the chart makes that pattern immediately visible.

When to use it

Board and executive reporting

Boards track headcount growth closely — it's a leading indicator of cost and capacity. A waterfall shows net change and its composition in one slide, which is clearer than a table of hire and departure counts.

Quarterly HR reviews

People teams use headcount waterfalls to track attrition patterns, backfill velocity, and net growth against plan. Breaking out voluntary vs involuntary attrition shows whether retention is improving.

Workforce planning presentations

When presenting hiring plans or restructuring scenarios, a waterfall chart makes proposed changes readable — leadership can see the before, each change, and the after in a single view.
