Peer Comparison by Category
A grouped vertical bar chart places two bars side by side for each category, making it possible to compare both entities within a category and across categories in a single view. When one bar consistently towers over the other in most categories but falls behind in one, that anomaly becomes the story. The format is built for competitive analysis: two entities, multiple dimensions, one chart that shows where each leads and where each lags.
This format is standard in McKinsey and BCG competitive benchmarking reports, government policy decks, and industry research presentations. Geopolitical analysts use it to compare countries across trade, innovation, or investment metrics. Corporate strategy teams use it to benchmark a company against a key competitor across revenue, margins, headcount, or market share by segment. Equity researchers use it to show how two companies compare on operating metrics that drive their relative valuation.
Two groups is the clearest version of this chart. Adding a third group is possible but increases visual complexity quickly. Use high-contrast colors, one dark and one light, so bars are distinguishable without relying on a legend. Order the categories by the size of the gap or by natural importance so the most telling comparison sits front and center. All category names, group labels, colors, and values can be edited in the chart editor, and the finished chart exports as PPTX, PNG, or MP4.
